The book "Green Cane & Juicy Flotsam..." gives us the ability to immerse and explore the culture of the different islands of the Caribbean. This time we have the opportunity to perceive the islands through the eyes of Dora Alonso and Phyllis Shand Allfrey. Dora represents Cuba while Phyllis represents Dominica. Through their short stories, both writers contribute to the discovery of the Caribbean. Through out the text they express a vivid and subjective image of the time period reflected on the story.

On the story, "Little Cog-Burt" we have the chance to take a look at the issues that were constantly dominating the island. Racism and discrimination are just a few examples of those issues attacking the islands. "Fair" people were stepping over the "dark" community, just for the reason of being of a different color. On this story, we have Moira, a female character that refuses to have anything to do with the natives of the island. She constantly daydreams of her lovely nation England and under any circumstance wants them to be part of her current chapter. We observe on the story that she is usually going back to those moments that were treasured on her heart.

For example, with her hands she elaborates a doll called "The Christmas Tree Fairy", she sewed part of her hair into the dolls head and at the Christmas Party she expects everyone to admire her work just like thy used to do in England. However, this time is totally different, only one little kid payed attention to it. This little kid was not Moira's favorite, in fact she mentions in the story that she couldn't resist him. "All except that revolting little Cog-Burt" she said, she clearly wasn't happy at all with his presence but she was making a tremendous effort to pretend everything was under control just to make his husband happy. When she offered the biggest present to Cog-Burt, he started crying & saying that he did not want it. He audaciously asked for the little doll. Moira was surprised by his reaction and couldn't believe it, despite that, she decided to give him the little doll. She thought that Cog-Burt was not worthy at all of such honor but did not have other option but to share his treasure with him, since he was the only one to actually notice her work of art.

We observe here, that Moira believes she is worthier than all of them. For the same reason, she is not interested at all in learning who they really are, what are their aspirations and dreams, do they even have some? What is their truly identity? What do they like?
